Program Highlight: National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association
National HBPA, Inc. was organized in 1940 to represent horsemen in the New England area on issues that affected them, their horses, and the industry. Today, at 29,000 members strong, NHBPA supports all facets of the Thoroughbred racing industry by serving as a representative voice for horsemen on critical industry issues, encouraging the highest standards of horsemanship, ensuring the safety of horses and all those who come in contact with race horses, developing rules to promote integrity in racing, and assisting in program development to provide aftercare when a horse’s racing career is over.
National HBPA has been a member of the UHC for over 10 years and recently awarded a grant to support Operation Gelding, which demonstrates a belief that members of the horse industry have a responsibility to create solutions to help address the unwanted horse issue no matter what discipline or breed they represent. The UHC is on the agenda to speak at the upcoming NHBPA annual conference next week. To learn more about the NHBPA, visit their website at https://nationalhbpa.com/. |
Success Story: New Careers as Therapy Horses
Small efforts can make a difference for unwanted horses. This month’s success story is about four horses that have found new careers as therapy horses. Each horse has a story; two of neglect, one of abuse, and one who was lucky enough to have a responsible owner who found him an appropriate home after a career-ending injury. All four now reside at Pine Meadow Horse Rescue & Community Alliance, a new 501(c)3 non-profit organization in Franklin, Indiana.
The organization’s goal is to empower underserved, at-risk youth and utilize the powerful horse-human bond to promote healing for both person and equine. Their newest program is a collaboration with Esperanza Ministries. The pilot program, His Princess Warriors, is designed to help girls understand a healthy definition of self, and with the help of the horses, master confidence in relationships and non-verbal communication. Another teen, suspended from school for drugs, has found a new direction thanks to the healing power of horses at PMHRCA. Learn about his experience in a feature news story at http://www.pinemeadowhorserescue.com/news. Many horses that are considered unwanted can have long, healthy lives with the right person or the right organization. PMHRCA is just one example of the many organizations and people who are helping these horses find new jobs and seeing positive results. |
